affordable Prescription Drugs
To protect our lives and well-being, all New Mexicans deserve access to affordable medications. Too many New Mexicans are struggling to afford the prescription drugs they need, often having to choose between their medication and other necessities, like rent and groceries. It is critical that New Mexico take action to ensure all state residents have access to affordable medications, because drugs don’t work if people can’t afford them.
Nearly half of New Mexicans have skipped taking medication or not filled a prescription because of cost concerns, according to a recent statewide survey. And the big drug companies have taken advantage of the pandemic to raise prices. Last year pharmaceutical companies raised the price of 183 drugs by at least $100 while continuing to rack up big profits.
Enough is enough. New Mexico needs to create a Prescription Drug Affordability Board with the authority to take action to make prescription drugs more affordable, including with a mandate to evaluate the cost of medications, hold big drug companies accountable, and negotiate more affordable prices for New Mexicans.
